Under the UK Gambling Commission’s Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP), all licensed operators must take proactive steps to protect players and promote safe gambling environments. We thought it would be a great idea to put together a quick post where we break down the 7 key pillars of responsible gambling, based on the latest LCCP guidance.
1. Protecting Children and Vulnerable People
First and foremost, and I think it goes without saying that operators must protect those most at risk. This means stopping underage gambling and safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The LCCP requires strict age checks at registration (to ensure the individual is over 18) and again before play begins.
In addition, marketing and product design must never appeal to children. They should also avoid appearing on platforms where minors are active.
2. Fair and Responsible Marketing
Next, promotions and advertising must be clear, fair, and responsible. Under the LCCP, gambling ads cannot mislead customers or exploit vulnerabilities. Terms and conditions must be visible, opt-outs must be honoured, and responsible gambling messages must be included.
Moreover, operators are prohibited from marketing to self-excluded users or to those showing signs of gambling harm.
3. Customer Interaction and Harm Prevention
Customer interaction is no longer optional and it’s now a requirement. Operators must use real-time data to spot risky behaviour, such as chasing losses or sudden spikes in activity.
Once identified, customers should receive tailored support, which can include a message, a pause in activity, or a direct interaction and once that is all completed, operators must also review these actions to check if they are effective.
4. Self-Exclusion and GAMSTOP
Another key safeguard is self-exclusion, where operators must provide tools for players who want to exclude themselves temporarily or permanently.
In addition, full integration with GAMSTOP is required, which is a UK-wide system blocks access for anyone who has self-excluded. Failure to honour this is a serious compliance breach, therefore, systems must be tested often to ensure they are working.
5. Affordability and Financial Risk Checks
With affordability in focus, operators must check if customers can sustain their gambling spend. Net losses, deposit frequency, and behavioural patterns should trigger financial risk checks.
When risks are flagged, operators may need to verify income or limit account activity. These steps protect customers from financial harm.
6. Staff Training and Competence
It’s impossible for any responsible gambling strategy to work without your teams being fully trained, therefore every team member from customer service to VIP managers must know how to spot harm, act quickly, and escalate when needed.
The LCCP also requires proof of training, so make sure that records must be kept, and refreshers provided regularly to keep standards high.
7. Transparency and Player Tools
Finally, operators must give customers access to tools that promote control. These include:
Deposit limits
Session Limits
Reality checks
Time-outs and Cool offs
Equally important, links to support services such as BeGambleAware, GamCare, and GAMSTOP must be easy to find and fully functional.
